Berry Bad Night - September 6, 2005

(Printer Friendly Version)

You may have noticed the two scrubs below this post, matted with filth from their Labor Day at the beach. These shots were taken a few minutes prior to our walk home through the Montrose area of Lincoln Park, the paths of which were lined with trees shedding berries and the first leaves. But mostly berries. While we walked home, Murph scooped as many of these berries as she could into her mouth. I would bend down and pull the mashed berry out, and some I got, but some I didn't. I figured, "Great. Diarrhea here we come."

And it came. Oh it came. Its as if God is punishing me for all that cheeky smack talk with poop follies.

It came in rivers. Poor Murph started squatting around midnight, and by 4am, her condition worsened. I woke from my slumber to her groaning while locked away in her house, screaming and clawing at the walls, trying to tip it over from the inside. I righted the house and heard her vomit. When I opened her cage door she burst out, hopped atop the "couch" I was sleeping on and sprayed half digested berries and blood all over my white linens, which I actually really like and keep pretty clean. Not anymore.

I wrapped her up in a towel and drove to the emergency vet with her in my lap, rather terrified, because the towel was filling with blood at an alarming rate (not a lot for uninvolved folk, but too much for mommy). The vets were kind about the whole ordeal, and very efficient. They put her on a doggy IV and searched through some "samples" left in the towel. Sure enough, those berries were toxic. Leave it to the city of Chicago to plant trees with toxic berries in their public parks.

She was released a few hours later. And though I'm still a wreck, she's now fuckin' fine, romping around the living room and pissing any time the neighbors sneeze.

Moral of the Story: If you take your dog to Lincoln Park, don't let it eat the berries.

Awwwww poor girl.

There's an animal poison control network you can call if you're ever wondering about anything she ingests again. http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pro_apcc

Oh man, you're lucky she managed to throw them up. Those kinda things are _not_ good when allowed to stay in the stomach =/
Glad she's coo' now though =D
