Censorship - May 16, 2008

I just recieved this comment about my previous story, and I wanted to respond to it, in part because I don't ever want my name colluding with censorship--of any kind, anywhere, ever--and because it's and honest question:

I agree that this art is a bit racially biased, but since when should artists censor themselves in order to be PC? It's how the guy feels.

I said he's an ignorant idiot. I don't think that's arguable, and because he's an idiot, I'm not certain I'd label this art as good. This dude literally went, "I don't get the complexities of human interaction, and I grew up poor--which I'm totally bitter about--so I'll just draw a lazy black man as a chicken," and Silverlake went, "We're stupid, conformist hipsters, and we like whatever's countercultural--even though we end up being derivative 99 percent of the time--and because they're "street," we totally love these chubby Hasidic chickens that aren't particularly well-rendered."

Which brings me to the technical. When the concept is so lacking in intelligence, the technical becomes the show, and this is technically crap.

It's all sooooooooooo lame. In fact, it's probably perfect hipster art.

I guess I didn't express myself as well as I could have. You're right, the guy is a tool. And I know that you would never advocate censorship in any way. But even jerks can produce great art, and a lot of his peers think his art is.
